Vineyards

Situated on the Teakle property in Port Lincoln, 2 km from the foreshore, with 150 meters elevation. The soils are a rich combination of sandy loam topsoil overlying a friable red-brown clay loam subsoil. The moderately warm summer temperatures and maritime breeze allow perfect ripening conditions in the vineyard. The long sunshine-hour days encourage even ripening of the grapes, while the gentle breeze helps cool the bunches, retaining the beautiful natural acidity.

Vintage

The spring of 2021 was warmer than normal which led to earlier bud burst and a lot of growth in the vineyard. Heavy rainfall occurred in January and February.  The summer of 2022 on the Eyre Peninsula was once again lower than average, which pushed harvest date out to late March for the Shiraz. Fruit set was improved showing a moderate growth in yields. 2022 is widely recognised in South Australia as a strong vintage, due to ideal growing conditions.

Winemaking

Picked and then destemmed with 30% whole bunch, handpicked berries were added to the open stainless steel fermenter with the crushed component pumped on top without crushing the berries. This allowed small amount of stalks and some whole bunch and whole berry fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation on skins took 2 weeks, in which time the ferment underwent pumpovers and plunging to wet the cap and gently extract tannins and colour. The wine was then pressed off in our basket press and then into
French Oak Hogsheads for barrel maturation.

Tasting Notes

This shiraz shows all the characters of our cool maritime climate with fresh plums and rhubarb, with some earthy, white pepper aromatics. It has a fine tannin structure that leaves a long silky finish. The natural acidity gives a maraschino cherry character which keeps the wine fresh and juicy. This wine is very approachable now, but will also benefit from medium term cellaring.
